I RECENTLY MET A MIDDLE-AGED Scottish man one cold morning in West London. I had just returned from a run, and I was stretching my limbs in the street. He stopped me and we got talking about exercise, and he reminisced about a childhood in Scotland in which exercise involved being out walking amongst trees and nature, and up Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak, located in the Scottish Highlands. He contrasted it with his life now, living within the compressed urban sprawl of London town, in which he now did no exercise. He lamented the fact that he had lost touch with the natural world that was such an intrinsic part of his childhood.
