FAILURE IS COOL - IF YOU LEARN FROM IT

The line between success and failure can be a fine one — but the best shortcut to winning ways may be to 'fail cool' By Ben Arogundade.

Basketball legend Michael Jordan in full flight. “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career,” he said. “I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

NOTHING IS COOLER THAN FAILURE. Failure is so cool that it will never go out of style, unlike most of the ephemera that we think is cool in our culture today. But, if you are going to fail in life, make sure that you “fail cool”. To fail cool means that in the very act of failure, you learn something — something that teaches you not to fail next time, or else pushes you one notch closer to being a success at whatever it is you are striving to achieve. When this happens, our so-called failures metamorphose instantly from being errors of judgement into learning vehicles. They become stepping-stones instead of paradigms of disappointment, ineptitude or shame. In the words of author James Joyce, they become “the portals to discovery.”

SHORT QUOTATIONS OF COOL
The opposite of failing cool is simply to fail. This is sometimes referred to as a “mistake”. A mistake is an action that the protagonist does not learn from. “All men make mistakes,” said Winston Churchill, “but only wise men learn from their mistakes.” History’s great thinkers, writers and philosophers have always known the truth about failing cool. Throughout the centuries they have consistently identified and described the same universal truths about cool failure, all within a diverse array of wise quotations and phrases. For example, the Winston Churchill quote referred to above is very similar in sentiment to a famous quotation from Henry Ford, which states; “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” Much older than Ford's phrase is this quote from Confucius, the ancient Chinese philosopher; “To make mistakes and not change oneself is truly a mistake.” In each of these examples the narrative is the same, only the language changes — that and the personalities delivering these quotes and phrases. My own humble contribution to the canon of great quotes and phrases; “Failure is cool, if you learn from it” — is one of the motivational quotes from my new app 365 Positivity.

FAILURE IS SUCCESS
Today, in many quarters, cool failure has become accepted as a compulsory part of success. America leads the way here; you are nobody in the US unless you’ve failed cool at least once on the road upward. Americans see failure as an education, a badge of honour almost. Europeans, by contrast, tend to be more cynical about success, and failure often brings with it the kind of shame and embarrassment that deters would-be entrepreneurs from ever trying again.

The stigma of failure begins in childhood, where we are perpetually chastised for getting things “wrong”, both at home and in school. Imagine how our approach to trying out entrepreneurial ideas could shift if parents and teachers taught children how to fail cool. Great things could be possible if children were shown that fearless failure is the great learning apprenticeship — the stopover to success, rather than the agent that prevents it.

BEST QUOTES & PHRASES INSPIRE
History is peppered with stories of famous talents who failed big and failed cool. Take the world of technology for example: Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg all failed cool at university before going on to change the world at their respective endeavours. Sport also has many notable examples. Take the case of basketball legend Michael Jordan. “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career,” he said. “I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
